A man has managed to reduce his electricity and gas bill to £0 thanks to his electric car. Paul Kershaw has offset his energy bills entirely by selling back excess power from his electric car.
By using new Vehicle to Grid (V2G) technology that OVO Energy has created with software partner Kaluza, Paul is able to charge his car at off-peak times when energy is cheaper and then sell energy back to the grid at peak times, making a profit. Through the technology, Paul exports enough energy to cover the cost of all his home’s electricity and gas.
Over the course of 12 months, Paul’s average spend on Electric Vehicle charging was £93 per month, while he earned £164 a month through exporting the energy back to the grid, saving the remaining £71 on average on his total energy bills from V2G credits. The V2G scheme, pioneered by OVO Energy, was the first and largest trial in the world, allowing customers to turn their electric vehicles into mini power stations nationwide.
The green technology requires little effort from the user, with the participants plugging in their EV to charge as normal and the Kaluza app calculating how much energy is needed in their daily lifestyles, selling any excess energy back to the grid.
