A man posing as a delivery driver pulled out a gun on a moped and murdered a 20-year-old student while attempting to rob his phone.
Renan Silva Loureiro was killed on April 25 last year in Jabaquara, south of São Paulo, Brazil and his killer was sentenced to 36 years this week.
Acxel Gabriel de Holanda Peres, 24, was also convicted of attempted robbery as Renan's girlfriend, who was 19 at the time, was also approached by Acxel, but survived.
CCTV cameras on a neighbour's house captured the horror moment when the couple were walking along the pavement and Acxel pulled out a gun with a delivery bag on his back.
Renan then kneels down and cried: "I have nothing" before he is shot four times, including in the head and then drops down dead.
At Acxel's father's house, the Military Police found a delivery bag, a gun and a jacket — items all seen on him the night of the killing.
"The feeling is one of happiness for having done justice but also of sadness for not being able to bring my son back. Seeing a son leave is knowing the greatest of all pains and no time will be able to heal", Renan's father wrote on social media.
Recent data shows that Brazil recorded 40,824 homicides in 2022 — an average of 111 violent deaths per day. The equivalent of one out of every five homicides in the world occurs in Brazil.
Two weeks ago, a man armed with a small axe attacked a daycare in southern Brazil, killing four young children in a tragedy that Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called a “monstrosity”.
“A tragedy like this is unacceptable, an absurd act of hate and cowardice … an act of violence against innocent and defenceless children,” President Lula said in a Twitter post.
The 25-year-old man scaled the wall of a private daycare in Blumenau, a city in the state of Santa Catarina and killed children between the ages of four and seven and injured several others.
The event took place just over a week after a 13-year-old student carried out a stabbing attack in a Sao Paulo school that killed a teacher and left five others wounded.
