A tragic case came to a close as Cleotha Abston, 40, pleaded guilty to charges including first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, and tampering with evidence in the 2022 kidnapping and killing of Memphis mother and teacher Eliza Fletcher. The judge sentenced Abston to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Eliza Fletcher, a 34-year-old mother of two young boys and a kindergarten teacher at St. Mary’s Episcopal School, disappeared during an early morning jog in September 2022. Her body was later discovered in South Memphis after a widespread search.
Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy expressed that the guilty plea brings finality for the family and the community, ensuring that Abston will never walk the streets again. Abston's trial was set to begin in February, but he waived his right to appeal.
During the sentencing, a statement from Fletcher's family addressed to Abston highlighted the impact of his actions, condemning the senseless violence that took Fletcher's life. Abston's criminal history includes juvenile convictions for rape and aggravated assault.
Forensic evidence and surveillance footage played a crucial role in identifying Abston as the perpetrator. Security cameras captured him forcibly taking Fletcher, leading to his arrest the day after she was reported missing.
Despite the legal resolution, Fletcher's family acknowledged that no sentence can ease the pain of losing her. They emphasized the positive impact she had on those around her and expressed gratitude for the support received during this difficult time.
The guilty plea ensures that Abston will spend the rest of his life behind bars, providing a measure of justice for the heinous crime committed against Eliza Fletcher.
