Man orders 'nothing burger' at McDonald's and is left in stitches when staff hand it over

An internet user has been left in stitches after he ordered a cheeseburger from McDonald's with everything taken off – including the burger and the bun.

American cartoonist Rob DenBleyker decided to test the limits of the burger customisation offered by the fast food chain to see what would happen if he subtracted everything from a regular Maccy D's cheeseburger and had it delivered to his door. The feature – available in the UK via the McDonald's app or by using the touchscreen order points at restaurants – allows diners to add or subtract toppings from their burger to their preference.

DenBleyker tweeted that he decided to try ordering a "nothing burger" with the app to test the limits of the restaurant's systems, to the point of farce, the Mirror reports. He wrote: "Will they cancel it? Deliver an empty bag? I am doing this so you don't have to."

A standard McDonalds cheeseburger in the US comes with mustard, ketchup, onions, pickles and cheese, served on a meat patty inside a regular burger bun. DenBleyker's order, which cost $1.89 (£1.56) came with absolutely none of that – not even the bun.

The cartoonist was in hysterics as he gleefully tweeted that the delivery driver from food app DoorDash had messaged him to say McDonald's was "confused as to what you want on your order". He did not respond to the courier's message, instead waiting for the vacuous order to arrive.

Minutes later, the delivery arrived – and DenBleyker was astounded to find he had been brought an empty burger wrapper by an extremely confused delivery driver. He later clarified that he had tipped the driver $6 (£5) for the trouble of dealing with his bizarre request.

With delivery fees included, he had paid a total of $15 (£12) for an empty wrapper. He also joked: "I also literally saved a cow's life by ordering a McNothing instead of a burger."

His initial tweet of the "nothing burger" order has been liked 178,000 times. Some saw the funny side of DenBleyker's experiment - while others scolded him for wasting the time of McDonald's staff and that of his delivery driver.

One person wrote: "This is amazing," while another added: "Just seems unnecessary and that you confused workers for no reason."

Another said: "Part of me is amused. Another part of me is annoyed you wasted so many people's time for s***s and giggles. Like they're just trying to do their job...why purposely make it more difficult for them?"

The Mirror has contacted McDonald's for comment.
