A man trying to evade police capture nearly drowned after trying to swim across the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.
A 35-year-old man was arrested in Bootle on Thursday, May 26 for a recall to prison. The man was first sighted on Stanley Road, Bootle before running away from plain clothed officers.
The man then tried to swim across the Leeds and Liverpool Canal following a short foot pursuit. But the man struggled to stay afloat and nearly drowned in the canal before an officer jumped in after to pull him out.

The man was brought back onto the towpath and arrested. He was later taken into custody and will be transferred to prison.
Merseyside Police published the information via their Sefton Police Facebook page. In a tongue-in-cheek post the police said the man "didn't have his armbands to hand" before adding the male "will be able to empty his shoes of water tomorrow in Her Majesty's Prison".
