Man lost an eye after knife attack and 'relentless' beating at hands of friend in Nottingham

A man was subjected to a "vicious" knife attack and relentless beating which claimed his eye, a court heard. Czeslaw Fraszczak spent weeks in intensive care after he was put in an induced coma over his injuries.

Nottingham Crown Court heard Mr Fraszczak is now blind in his left eye, had fractured bones in his face, cheekbone, jaw and eye socket, to his lower spine. His right eye is blurry, making it difficult for him to see people.

He described being in "complete shock" when he woke up and could not believe he had lost weeks of his life being in hospital. He lost his job as a result of not being able to see and fears he will be unable to work again.

He hopes to fall in love and fears he never will, the court was told on Friday (January 20). Friend and fellow Pole Sebastian Teos had attacked him on April 18 last year - just months after Teos arrived in the UK after release from prison in Poland.

The circumstances were pieced together because Mr Fraszczak could not remember what happened and Teos was drunk at the time and could not recall what happened. An ambulance was called that night to Mr Fraszczak's home in Longmead Drive, Daybrook.

Mr Fraszczak was lying in his bathroom, "looking, I am sure, as if he were dead," said Luc Chignell, prosecuting. "He was unconscious," said Mr Chignell.

"It was clear to them at that point he had been stabbed. There is a photo of him in the bathtub. It must have been taken by the defendant.

"He received first aid at the scene, and was taken to the emergency department at the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, where he was treated for a couple of weeks and had some serious injuries". Through Mr Fraszczak's injuries and blood at the scene, police concluded what had happened.

Blood was soaked in the walls of the kitchen and living room downstairs. Some of the blows to the victim were inflicted when he was in a sitting or in a kneeling position, and he had several cuts to his ear, shoulder, right leg and arm.

"He not only had stab wounds," added Mr Chignell. "It appears he got a beating from the nature of some of the injuries suffered". Police viewed CCTV of the men arriving at Mr Fraszczak's home on good terms carrying bottles.

They found a kitchen knife covered in blood, which Mr Chignell said the prosecution relied on being the source of some of the wounds in the home, and more evidence of a frenzied attack with a knife. The four-and-a-half inch blade was recovered from the bottom of the stairs.

Mr Chignell described it as a "vicious knife attack" and a "relentless beating", causing permanent blindness to one eye, and having a profound impact on him. Mitigating, Katrina Wilson said: "Very little is known as to why on earth this happened. What is plain, the victim and the defendant were friends and knew each other from Poland; friends of some level.

"They knew each other from their home country and reconnected here". Recorder David Bedenham jailed Teos, 26, of Palm Street, New Basford, for eight years, of which he will serve two-thirds, with an extended licence on release of two years.

"I consider you dangerous in the meaning of the legislation," he told Teos, who had pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
