Man killed in Australia’s second fatal shark attack this year

  • A 38-year-old man died on Saturday after being attacked by a 4-metre great white shark while spearfishing near Horseshoe Reef, north of Marjorie Bay on Rottnest Island, Western Australia.
  • The incident occurred about 9.54am local time, with the man being bitten on his legs about 80 metres from shore and 20 metres from his boat.
  • Despite efforts by paramedics and police to perform CPR after he was brought ashore, the man could not be revived.
  • This marks Australia's second fatal shark attack this year and the first in Western Australia since March 2025, with great white sharks being responsible for about 40 per cent of shark bites and all fatal attacks in WA since 1980.
  • Western Australia's Premier Roger Cook expressed condolences, and authorities, including the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, have urged additional caution in the area and are monitoring the waters.
