A man killed by a Luas in the early hours of Sunday morning had missed his stop and was walking back on the tracks when he was struck.
The victim was hit in a dimly-lit area on the green line between the Cabra and Broombridge stops, where pedestrians are not permitted. It is understood the man, who was in his 50s, had been on a previous tram and when he reached Broombridge – where the service terminates – he began to walk back towards the city centre along the tracks.
The speed limit for the Luas on the stretch where the tragedy occurred is 60kph.

A source told the Irish Mirror: “The man was on a previous tram, he might have fallen asleep and missed his stop.
“When he got to Broombridge, he realised his mistake. There were no more trams heading into the city centre so he decided to walk. The tram which struck him was the last service to Broombridge.
“The area is very dim and people aren’t allowed to walk there. It’s an awful tragedy. The driver who hit him had more than 16 years of experience.
“He is expected to take some time off and the company will offer him support.”
The Irish Mirror understands there were passengers on the Luas at the time of the collision.
Gardai have launched a probe into the collision.
