Man jumped out window to escape thug's savage attack

A thug subjected a carer to a brutal attack that left him so scared for his own life he jumped out a first floor window to escape.

Paul Maylor left his victim in a coma for days after beating, kicking and biting him in a prolonged assault in early 2020. Liverpool Crown Court heard Maylor had been drinking and taking cocaine before the attack at the home of a friend in north Liverpool.

Maylor later went on to seriously injure his nephew in a separate incident while on bail for his attack on Peter Gibbons. Stella Hayden, prosecuting, told Liverpool Crown Court Maylor had been with Mr Gibbons at the flat of their friend Paul Lavery.

The court heard the two men helped care for him as he was in poor health but that all three also sometimes drank heavily together. Mr Gibbons was apparently particularly important in helping Mr Lavery and was frequently at his flat on Eaton Road. The men were together on January 31, 2020, when Maylor, after drinking and taking cocaine, apparently became angry in the early hours of the morning and accused Mr Gibbons of stealing money.

He then launched an attack said to last at least ten minutes, kicking, punching and biting Mr Gibbons. Photos from the scene showed large amounts of blood across the floor, walls and ceiling of the living room. Mr Gibbons was lying on the floor after the attack when he heard Maylor talk about getting a plastic sheet from the bathroom. Mr Gibbons thought he may use it to kill him.

Ms Hayden said: “He describes how he was on the floor struggling to breath when he heard the defendant say he was ‘going to get some plastic’. He took this as a threat on his life and so he jumped out of the first floor window, went down a drainpipe and then fled and called the emergency services.”

She said Mr Gibbons then passed out but was found and taken to hospital. He was put into a coma and remained in hospital for four weeks after being found to have two collapsed lungs, broken ribs, broken vertebrae, a bleed on the brain and injuries to his spleen.

He is now blind in his left eye due to the attack. Maylor denies his role in the incident to this day despite a jury finding him guilty earlier this year. The 58-year-old was originally bailed after being arrested for the attack on Mr Gibbons - yet months later he went on to seriously injure his own nephew in an entirely separate attack.

That attack, involving a single punch which caused 43-year-old Thomas Maylor to suffer injuries to his head, took place on December 18 last year. Maylor later admitted wounding his nephew without intent while a jury found him guilty of the attack on Mr Gibbons.

Charles Lander, defending, said Maylor, who has previous convictions for battery, said his crimes were obviously extremely serious and said probation officers pointed to the deaths of a number of close family members in close succession as a potential contributing factor. He said: “The best I can say on behalf of this defendant is really set out in the pre-sentence report about the various traumatic issues that have faced the defendant over the years.”

Judge Robert Trevor-Jones, said: “Both the victims in each of these cases were seriously injured, causing them to be in hospital for significant periods of time and with both now enduring permanent issues.” Maylor, of Clapham Road, was jailed for 14 years and five months.
