Man in 'serious condition' in hospital after car overturns in crash

A man remains in hospital after suffering serious injuries when a Mini Cooper overturned onto an embankment.

Cheshire Police told the ECHO the patient, a man in his 40s, was freed from the car after it crashed on the Southern Expressway in Runcorn shortly before 6pm on Monday. He was taken to Aintree hospital by ambulance.

Officers arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with the collision on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to provide a specimen, and possessing unspecified Class A drugs and Class B cannabis. A force spokeswoman said the suspect is believed to have left the scene of the crash.

He was arrested at his home address, which is when the suspected drugs were seized.

The southbound carriageway was shut for a large emergency services response including multiple police cars - both marked and unmarked - two fire engines from Runcorn and Widnes, and several North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) vehicles including a rapid response car.

A NWAS spokeswoman said a male patient was taken to hospital by ambulance.

She said NWAS was called to the collision at 6.08pm.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) said crews stabilised the vehicle and carried out first aid until paramedics arrived, and continued to assist with treatment until the patient was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Police said the casualty remains in a "serious condition" as they appealed for witnesses and any footage that might assist the investigation.

The force spokeswoman said: “Shortly before 6pm on Monday, October 17, police were called to reports of a collision on the A533 Runcorn Southern Expressway.

“Officers attended the scene and on arrival they found a silver car which had come off the road and overturned on an embankment.

“One person was trapped in the car, they were released by firefighters and have been taken to Aintree hospital with serious injuries.

“A 29-year-old local man has since been arrested in relation to the collision and he is currently assisting officers.

“Enquiries to establish the full circumstances in relation to the collision are in the early stages and anyone with any information or video footage is urged to contact Cheshire Police on 101, or at www.cheshire.police.uk/tell-us , quoting IML 1391017.”
