An off-duty doctor rushed to help a young man who suffered multiple gunshot wounds in south London, according to eyewitnesses.

The 20-year-old - now fighting for life in hospital - was discovered by police patrolling Camberwell Church Street at the junction with Grove Lane at roughly 5.40pm on Wednesday. He had gun and head injuries, police said.

Staff at the nearby Falafel and Shawarma takeaway described hearing a “massive bang” before the victim smashed into their front window.

Detectives are linking it to shots fired minutes earlier in the area of a playground on Leontine Close, Peckham.

Restaurant worker Mona Idris said: “We just heard a loud noise at the door and when we went, there was glass everywhere.

“The guy was lying on the ground. When he was on the road, a doctor was by his side and they were trying to save him until the ambulance came.”

The man was further treated at the scene by London’s Air Ambulance before being taken to a south London hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

His next of kin have been informed.

A crime scene with forensic tent is in place and no arrests have been made.

The Metropolitan Police said: “The two incidents have been linked. There are no reports of any other injured person.”

It follows the separate shooting of a 24-year-old woman in West Green Road, Tottenham at about 6.30am on Wednesday.

A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. He remains in custody.

Anyone with information on the Southwark incident is asked to call police via 101, quoting CAD 4464/28Dec, the Trident (voicemail) on 020 8247 4863 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
