A distinctive tattoo has helped police identify and charge the alleged driver of a stolen SUV involved in a fiery crash on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Police allege the 19-year-old Queensland man assaulted a 27-year-old man and stole his Toyota Kluger in the CBD just before 7am on Monday.
The SUV flipped after colliding with an oncoming van, which then bounced and crashed into a third vehicle.
The man was freed from the Kluger shortly before the vehicle burst into flames after the peak hour crash that injured two other people.
The three drivers were taken to hospital and the ensuing carnage closed the bridge for about three hours, causing traffic chaos.
Investigators were able to identify the Kluger driver following a public appeal for information on Tuesday, which included releasing a photo of a distinctive tattoo on his hand.
About midday on Wednesday, officers visited the 19-year-old in hospital and charged him with assault and dangerous driving.
A bedside hearing for a mention before Central Local Court was set to take place on Wednesday.
