Man hospitalised after falling from bonfire during Twelfth event in Down

A man has been hospitalised after falling from a bonfire in Co Down.

The incident happened on Tuesday night, July 11, in Newtownards at around 10pm.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) responded to calls related to an injury sustained from a fall on the Portaferry Road in the town.

"NIAS dispatched a Rapid Response Paramedic and emergency crew to the incident," a spokesman for the ambulance service said.

Crowds in attendance at the pyre burning gathered at the scene and the injured man was taken to safety in a nearby fire station until the ambulance arrived.

A PSNI statement on the incident said: "Police responded to a report of an incident at a bonfire in the Portaferry Road area of Newtownards this evening, July 11th. One person has been taken to hospital."

Last year, a man died after a fall from a bonfire in Co Antrim after which a world record 220ft bonfire was erected in his honour.
