A man has been charged with a second offence after a 12-year-old boy riding a scooter died following a collision with a ute on the Sunshine Coast.

The 27-year-old man was initially charged with drink driving following the September 3 crash at Bli Bli after allegedly recording a blood alcohol reading of 0.069.

Police on Thursday said the man had also been charged with the dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

The 12-year-old boy was struck by a Mazda ute on David Low Way after 5pm on September 3, police said.

He was airlifted to a Brisbane hospital where he died a fortnight later.

The 27-year-old man is due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on October 30.
