A homeowner was left baffled after pest control discovered a woodpecker's "entire life savings" stashed inside his walls. Nick Castro, owner of Nick's Extreme Pest Control, received a call from a concerned resident in Glen Ellen, California, who spotted "maggots and mealworms" crawling around his house.
He assumed an animal must have found its way into his wall and died inside - and called out a professional for their opinion. When Nick arrived at the house, he cut a small hole in to the wall in the second-floor bedroom and was stunned when tens of thousands of acorns poured out the opening.
The pile ended up being about 20 feet high, weighing an estimated 700 pounds.
Nick said on Facebook: "Came across this on a job. Bird was a bit of a hoarder. Filled up about eight garbage bags full of acorns weighing in about 700 lbs. Unreal never - came across something like this."
But not only did the bird leave the homeowner with a huge mess to clean but also holes all over his house to patch up.
Nick went on to investigate the entire house and came across holes in the chimney stack, saying the bird has likely been stashing his acorns in there for two to five years.
Nick added: "This bird stored food all over. There's clear woodpecker holes all over the house.
"Acorns stored all over siding and trim. It's completely destroyed the exterior of house with all the holes everywhere.
"This bird was crazy we actually saw him there when we were there putting more in the holes he created."
Nick managed to repair the damage the bird caused and blocked its entry points into the home, hopefully leaving the homeowner with an acorn-free house to live in.
Commenting on Nick's post, one Facebook user said: "That woodpecker will be devastated. Worked so hard for this fortune and it's all gone. Like if a millionaire suddenly lost all the money he tirelessly worked for."
Another user added: "Talk about living in the nut house!"
A third user said: "Please tell me you returned that 700lbs saving to that poor bird."
