Many of us expect to find the love of our life in our younger years and some may give up hope as we grow older, but Julian Moyle has proved it's never too late to find the one. The 95-year-old got married for the first time in his life on Thursday to his soulmate, 84-year-old Valerie Williams, and said the joyous occasion was "like a new year".
The touching marriage ceremony was held in Calvary Baptist Church in Canton, Cardiff, and saw around 40 of their friends and family in attendance. An opera singer performed on the day - a nod to Mr Moyle's operatic career - and the couple's wedding cake was made by Let Them See Cake, a famous bakery just down the road from the venue.
Julian, who is originally from Australia, emigrated in 1954. From 1970 until 1982, he was a soloist in the Welsh National Opera. He met his now wife - who was born and bred in Cardiff - 23 years ago in the very church that has just celebrated their nuptials. He proposed just a few months ago on February 4. Talking about how happy they were to be finally getting married after so long, Valerie said, "I can't believe it" while Julian said it was "marvellous." Valerie added that they were most looking forward to "just being together" throughout their married life. The couple will celebrate their honeymoon later in the year, when they plan on travelling to Julian's homeland.
"It's going to be a deferred honeymoon to Australia, where I will show Mrs Moyle off," he said. Asked how he felt to be finally departing from his bachelorhood, Julian joked: "I can't remember any other marriages."
He continued: "It's like Janus, who had a face on the front of his head and another one on the back of his head, so he could look into the future and into the past. It's like a new year, isn't it, in a way? So I'm looking very much to your companionship."
Valerie said: "I make you laugh, don't I? He keeps telling me, she makes me laugh - I don't know why," and Julian added: "You don't know how funny she could be."
As for how they would describe each other, Valerie said he's "a fine gentleman", while Julian said: "Simpatico. She's so, so kind and giving. - loving and giving." To get more Cardiff stories like this sent straight to you inbox every single day, click here.
