MUMBAI: A special POCSO court recently convicted and sentenced a 35-year-old man to 5.7 years (time spent in prison as an undertrial) for attempting to rape a 10-year-old girl in his neighbourhood in 2016.
The child was rescued by a man who had come to repair the building lift. Relying on the statements of witnesses, the court said, “Offence of attempt to commit rape, attempt to commit penetrative sexual assault and attempt to commit aggravated penetrative sexual assault has been proved.”
Sentencing the accused to time spent in jail, the court said, “As per his submission he is only earning member in the family, he has an old aged mother and 10-year-old son. Considering that he is the only earning member and the seriousness of the offences, leniency is required to be shown,” the court said.
