Man from Surrey completes World's Toughest Row with pacemaker, raising awareness

Elliot Awin is the first person to complete the World's Toughest Row with a pacemaker.

A man from Surrey has accomplished an extraordinary feat by becoming the first person to complete the World's Toughest Row with a pacemaker. Elliot Awin, a 37-year-old wine importer from Dorking, embarked on a solo 3,000-mile journey from San Sebastian de La Gomera, Spain, to Nelson's Dockyard, Antigua in December. His boat, aptly named Pacemaker, carried him across the challenging expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, and after 44 arduous days, Awin reached his destination on Friday.

A longtime rugby player, Awin had to give up the sport approximately nine years ago when he was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. However, he didn't allow this setback to dampen his spirit. Instead, he turned to CrossFit and eventually discovered a passion for rowing. In 2020, Awin underwent surgery to have a pacemaker implanted. Remarkably, just four years later, he completed the World's Toughest Row, defying all odds.

In reflecting on his achievement, Awin expressed his desire to inspire others who might be hesitant about getting a pacemaker. 'A lot of people refuse to get a pacemaker as they're worried they won't be able to play with their grandchildren or run for the bus,' he said. 'But what better way to show people they should get it – I just rowed the Atlantic! Yes, it changed my life, but I can still do epic stuff.'

Motivated by his personal experiences with heart health, Awin established a charity called Wave Wrangler. The organization serves as a platform for individuals living with arrhythmia to share their stories and experiences while also raising funds for important causes. One of their goals is to provide defibrillators to underfunded sports centers and communities. Moreover, a portion of the funds raised during Awin's Atlantic challenge will be donated to the British Heart Foundation.

Speaking about his own journey and raising awareness, Awin emphasized the importance of seeking medical help when experiencing heart issues. He recounted instances when he ignored the signs, only to eventually find himself in an ambulance. Awin urged others not to be ashamed or hesitant to call for help when necessary. He also expressed gratitude for the advancements in technology, research, and the incredible doctors who have played a critical role in his journey towards better heart health.

Elliot Awin's remarkable accomplishments and his commitment to raising awareness are truly inspiring. By sharing his story and pushing his limits, he is not only demonstrating his indomitable spirit but also giving hope to countless others who may be facing similar challenges.
