A man has been taken to hospital after his car plunged off an inner city cliff.
The 70-year-old man's white Hyundai hatchback went off an embankment at the end of Darghan Street at Glebe, in Sydney's inner west, about 10am on Monday.
Craig Klineberg told AAP he was in his car when he heard a loud bang like an explosion as the Hyundai hit a barrier.
The sound was followed by an even louder noise as the car plunged onto Railway Street below, near a light rail line.
"The noise was incredible," Mr Klineberg said.
He and nearby tradies went to the driver's aid before emergency services arrived on the scene.
Firefighters and paramedics worked to free the man, who was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
The car ended up at the bottom of stairs down a rock cliff face adjacent to a light rail line, but a Transport for NSW spokesperson said the crash did not impact the tracks or services.
