Police intercepted a man damaging a pole at the city bus interchange on Monday, only to unearth a 3D-printed firearm, ammunition and firearm parts in his possession. He was arrested and charged.
ACT Policing said that at about 3.15pm on Monday, June 8, city station officers were patrolling on Alinga Street when they observed a man allegedly engaging in vandalism at the city bus interchange.
Police attempted to speak with the man, but he violently resisted and attempted to fight the officers.
He was subsequently arrested, and during a search of his belongings, police officers located a 40-centimetre-long curved knife, as well as a 3D-printed firearm, various firearm parts and ammunition.
The man, identified to be a 24-year-old from Belconnen, was charged with defacing public property, resist territory official, possessing a knife without reasonable excuse, unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm and possession of ammunition. He will face the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
ACT Policing reminds the community it is an offence to carry knives or other bladed weapons without a reasonable excuse.
"Self-defence is not a reasonable excuse," police said.
Anyone who has information about the creation or possession of 3D-printed guns is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Information can be provided anonymously.
