A man was found with serious eye injuries in St John's Gardens after being assaulted.

Police were patrolling Queen Square Bus Station, in the early hours of this morning, when they were approached by a man who said he had been involved in an altercation with another man in St John's Gardens. Officers searched the gardens and found a man, in his 30s, with a serious eye injury.

The man was taken to hospital, where he remains for treatment. Later it was confirmed that another man, in his 30s, had taken himself to hospital with serious face injuries after reportedly being attacked.

A 17-year-old man, from St Helens, has been arrested on suspicion of two counts of assault. He is still in police custody to be questioned.
