Man fighting for his life after car lands on roof in Orkney crash

A MAN is fighting for his life after a serious crash in Orkney.

A white Mitsubushi L200 pickup and a blue Toyota Yaris both ended up on their roofs when they collided from opposite directions on the A961 at around 11.15am on Saturday, August 17.

The crash happened just north of the junction with the B9044 towards South Cara.

The road was closed for approximately 15 hours while officers carried out their investigations.

After being taken to Balfour Hospital for initial treatment, the 53-year-old male driver of the Mitsubishi was later airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where medical staff describe his condition as critical.

The 40-year-old male driver of the Yaris was discharged from hospital after being checked over.

Police are now keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash or may have dash-cam footage.

Sergeant Neil MacDonald from Road Policing said: “Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding this collision and we are appealing for anyone who may be able to assist to please come forward.

“We would like to speak to anyone who was on the road around the time of the incident, who either witnessed what happened or noticed either vehicle prior to the collision. We would particularly urge any motorists with dash-cam footage which could be of significance to get in touch.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101."
