Blood was coming out of Gayle Potter's ears as the 46-year-old Victorian woman's partner desperately tried to performed CPR on her in the dark.
She had argued with her ex-husband, Glenn Martyn, in the driveway of her Traralgon home before he drove off.
Ms Potter's partner, Dean Matzke, then found her body lying on the ground. The carpenter grabbed some towels, rang triple zero and performed CPR for about 15 minutes before paramedics arrived.
"I just yelled out to her and checked her pulse - I saw blood coming out of her head and her ears," Mr Matzke told the Victorian Supreme Court on Tuesday.
Ms Potter's son rang his grandparents before calling Martyn, his father, who told him he thought he only bumped her.
The 57-year-old is standing trial accused of the negligent manslaughter of Ms Potter at the Latrobe Valley town in October 2018.
Ms Potter and Martyn - whom she divorced 11 years earlier - had a heated argument as she stood outside his car window in her driveway, prosecutor Robyn Harper said.
The prosecution alleges Martyn then drove forward and his rear driver-side wheel caught his ex-wife, causing her to get dragged under the car.
Martyn, who is also charged with failing to render assistance after an accident, allegedly told his daughter on the phone Ms Potter hit his car and he didn't know he struck her.
The prosecutor said he then texted his daughter: "So how is she? And when you calm down, you can hear my side."
She responded: "You f***ing killed her".
Ms Potter, who had two children with Martyn and one with Mr Matzke, was pronounced dead at the scene at 8.48pm.
Martyn's defence barrister, Peter Morrissey SC, argues Ms Potter caused the accident by going at him through his car window.
"This is really a case about a few very panic stricken moments," Mr Morrissey said on Monday.
"They happen at night, they happen in complete darkness in an unlit area on the road, they happen unexpectedly.
"No one wanted them to happen; not Gayle Potter and not the accused man, Glenn. All he wanted to do was to leave and it was absolutely the right thing to do, to get out of there."
Marytn is also facing an alternative charge of dangerous driving causing death.
The trial continues.
