A man has died following a serious road collision, police said. Emergency services were called to Victoria Street, Newark, at around 10.30pm on Thursday, May 18, following a single vehicle collision.
A 19-year-old man who was driving the van involved suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterwards. His family has been informed and are currently being supported by specially trained officers.
Victoria Street was closed for several hours but has since been reopened. Detective Constable Liah Lane, of Nottinghamshire Police ’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was a truly tragic incident that resulted in the untimely death of a young man.

“Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family and friends, who are currently being supported at this sad time. An investigation is currently ongoing to establish exactly what happened, so it’s extremely important that anyone who can assist us does so.
“We’d ask that anyone who witnessed the collision or has dash cam footage or CCTV that could aid our inquiries comes forward immediately.” Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 101, quoting incident 925 of 18 May 2023.
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Area Manager, Andy Macey, stated: "On behalf of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, I would like to express my condolences to the man’s family and friends for their loss. We are grateful to our firefighters and all other Emergency Services for their support at the scene."
People have been visiting the scene of the crash this morning to leave flowers in tribute to the young man. Residents in the area have also been paying their respects and shared their shock over what happened.
Mum Christina Radu, 35, lives close to where the accident occurred. She said: "We heard a very loud noise and then my partner went outside and saw the accident. I've heard he was only 19 years old.
"My condolences to the family, it's just awful." A retired woman in her 70s also lives close to the scene.
She said: "I saw it on Google this morning. I'm very sorry to hear that someone has lost their life, it's so sad." The woman went on to describe Farndon Road as "a busy road."
A 54 year old resident who did not wish to be named said: "We heard the bang as it was right outside. My husband went out and called the fire service.
"We knew it was serious because there was a van on its side. I think it all happened at like half past 10 as that's when we heard the bang, then we heard traffic coming through again about half six."
