A MAN has died following a crash in Shetland, with friends describing him as a “kind man who contributed so much” to the local community.
Police were called to a report of a single-vehicle crash on the island of Papa Stour at around 5.30pm on Friday.
Emergency services attended the scene where a 51-year-old man was found with serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. He later died from his injuries.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said inquiries were ongoing.
The man has been named locally as Peter Peterson, a manager for executive services at Shetland Islands Council, according to Shetland News.
Shetland Islands Council chief executive Maggie Sandison has led tributes to Peterson, saying she had lost a friend and the island had “lost an outstanding officer”.
She said: “He had a passion for public service and for achieving positive outcomes for Shetland.
“He was a kind man who contributed so much to our organisation and the community.
“I will miss his wisdom, energy, thoughtfulness, patience and humour. My thoughts are with his family at this devastating time.”
It is understood the Shetland Football Association postponed Saturday’s Fraser Cup final between Spurs and Whalsay due to Peterson’s death.
The 51-year-old had been a prominent figure in the island's footballing community, winning a gold medal with Shetland at the 2005 Island Games.
