An 89-year-old man has died in hospital after an alleged assault at a home in northern NSW.

Police were called to a home on Keen Street, Girrards Hill, in Lismore about 12.45pm on September 30 and found the homeowner suffering critical head injuries.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was taken to Lismore Base Hospital with multiple fractures.

Police said on Saturday investigators had been advised the man had died in hospital.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

A 46-year-old man was arrested at the time of the incident and charged.

He remains before the courts.

Police investigations into the incident continue.
