(Picture: AP)A fan died and a child was left in a coma after celebrations in Buenos Aires for Argentina’s World Cup triumph descended into chaos.
The World Cup winners were met with a heroes’ welcome as millions lined the streets to greet the team in the country’s capital on Tuesday.
But the celebrations turned to tragedy as one fan plunged to his death from a height while jumping on a roof, according to a local police statement.
The Ministry of Health said that the 24-year-old died in Fernandez Hospital after suffering a severe head injury.
A child was also struck by a falling piece of marble amid celebrations in a square and is on life-support.
Local reports suggested the heavy block fell from a monument during the wild celebrations, striking the five-year-old boy.
Fireworks were set off and confetti was fired into the air as riot police were attacked as they tried to control the crowds.
The celebrations were cut short by armed police with one officer caught on camera appearing to fire a shotgun into the jubilant fans.

The players who were triumphant in Sunday’s World Cup final in Qatar were unable to reach the central Obelisco monument as planned because the route was completely blocked by the heaving crowd, estimated by local media at over four million people.
The government made Tuesday a national holiday to allow fans to celebrate the win.
Captain Lionel Messi was the first off the plane at around 4am local time and he held the World Cup trophy aloft before leading the squad straight onto an open-top bus.
