Man dies after falling from bridge over M4 near Newport

A man has died after falling from a bridge over the M4 motorway. Emergency services rushed to the scene near Newport on Saturday, September 24, with the incident shutting the road in both directions and leading to eight-mile tailbacks.

The incident occurred on the eastbound carriageway between junction 25 Caerleon and junction 24 Coldra. Police and ambulance crews were called at around 11.20am and later confirmed that the man had died at the scene.

Traffic remained heavy on the road between Newport and Cardiff for several hours while crews dealt with the incident, with the air ambulance also landing at the scene.

Crews from the Welsh Ambulance Service also attended, with a spokesperson saying: "We were called Saturday (24 September) at 11:17am, to reports of an incident on the M4, between Junctions 24 and 25. We sent one rapid response vehicle, two emergency ambulances and a duty operations manager to the scene, where we were supported by the Wales Air Ambulance."

All traffic was held in both directions following the incident, but the westbound carriageway re-opened at 12.17pm. Ten minutes later, lane three was opened eastbound to release trapped traffic, with Traffic Wales confirming at 2.12pm that all lanes had reopened while congestion led back to junction 28 Tredegar Park.

Traffic cameras showed heavy delays on the motorway between Cardiff and Newport for much of the early afternoon.
