Man dies after crash that saw three others injured

An elderly man has died following a two-car crash in Denbighshire at the weekend that saw three others injured. The 89-year-old man, from Flintshire, died in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred on the A494 between the Griffin Inn pub and the B5430 turn-off at Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd on Saturday. Emergency services were called to scene at around 1.10pm following the accident involving a Citroen C4 and a Mercedes A200. Four were people taken to hospital and the road was shut for around three hours following the crash, North Wales Live reports.

In a statement, on Tuesday police said: "Sadly, a man has died following a road traffic collision in Denbighshire at the weekend. Shortly after 1pm on Saturday (July 23) North Wales Police were called following reports of a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the A494 at Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd, involving a Citroen C4 and a Mercedes A200. Both occupants of the Citroen C4 were taken to hospital in Stoke.

"Sadly, the driver, an 89-year-old man from the Flintshire area, died during the early hours of this morning (Tuesday). The female passenger has since been released from hospital. Both occupants of the Mercedes sustained minor injuries following the collision."

Sergeant Nicola Laurie of the Roads Policing Unit added: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this time. We’d like to thank all witnesses who are assisting us with our ongoing investigation.”

Following the collision, a spokesperson for the Welsh Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 13.12 to a collision on the A494 near Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd. We sent four rapid response vehicles, three emergency response ambulances and two air ambulances.

"One patient was airlifted to Stoke University Hospital and another was conveyed to the same hospital via land ambulance. Two additional patients were conveyed to Wrexham Maelor Hospital via land ambulances."

A spokesperson for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service added: “We were called to a road traffic collision on the A494 near Ruthin at 1.10pm and attended with two appliances, one from Mold and an additional unit supported by Wrexham crews who were on standby in Ruthin. We had reports of one person being trapped in a vehicle which led to one male extracted from the vehicle and in total four people were taken to hospital."
