Man dies after being hit by car and driven down road on bonnet in Dublin as gardai launch probe

A 50-year-old man has died in hospital after he was critically injured during an incident in Dublin last weekend.

The man, named as Ian McDonnell, was found lying on a roadway with life-threatening injuries on Robinhood Road in Clondalkin last Sunday.

Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene at around 6.15pm.

It has since been established that Mr McDonnell had visited his business premises in the area a short time earlier.

While there, he tried to stop his car from being stolen but by doing so, he was hit and carried on the bonnet of the vehicle for "a distance" down the road.

He was taken to Tallaght University Hospital in a serious condition but he sadly passed away yesterday evening.

A family liaison officer has been appointed to his family and a post-mortem will be carried out today.

Gardai have issued several appeals for information in connection with the incident.

"Significant progress has been made to date in the investigation including interviewing of witnesses, door-to-door enquiries and harvesting of CCTV images.
