The 28-year-old, who only recently returned from a hamstring injury, was forced off during the 2-1 win over Leeds on Saturday with a calf problem.

Kyle Walker was swiftly called upon to replace the Dutch centre-back and he starts at the Bernabeu, with his pace likely to be crucial as City attempt to keep Vinicius Jr quiet. Manuel Akanji moves over to the left side of defence to cover Ake, as he did against Arsenal.

In more positive news, Kevin De Bruyne returned from injury against Leeds after missing the previous two games and starts in Madrid. Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez were the stars of the show against, with two goals and two assists between them, but Mahrez is forced to settle for a place on the bench.

John Stones, Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish were all rested against Leeds and come in to start.
