Man City vs Arsenal LIVE: Premier League result, latest updates and fan reaction

Man City vs Arsenal LIVE!

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland picked the perfect time to end his lean spell in the Premier League with the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over leaders Arsenal to give his side the edge in the title race on Sunday.

The Norwegian had not scored in the league since February but his emphatic finish after 65 minutes of a compelling Etihad Stadium showdown proved decisive as City moved three points behind Arsenal with a game in hand.

Victory over relegation-bound Burnley on Wednesday would move City ‌top of the table with five games to play. Arsenal, who have been favourites to win their first ‌title since 2004 having led ‌the race for so long, have 70 points from 33 games with City on 67 from 32.

City began the game with momentum after Arsenal's surprise home defeat by Bournemouth last week had opened the door and they got the perfect start with Rayan Cherki's brilliant solo goal giving them the lead in the 15th minute.

But Arsenal were gifted an equaliser ‌less than two minutes later as home keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma's hesitation was punished by ‌Kai Havertz. Eberechi Eze struck the woodwork for Arsenal as both sides sought a winner after the break but it was Haaland ‌who popped up with his 23rd league ‌goal of the season after great work by Nico O'Reilly.

Man City 2-1 Arsenal

17:59 , Alex Young

70min: White and Trossard are being readied.

Matt Verri at the Etihad

17:57 , Alex Young

Martinelli has to track back better there. He should have the fresh legs, but Donnarumma throws it out to O'Reilly and Martinelli is not even in the picture as City attack.

Once Haaland is picked out there, the end result is obvious.

Man City 2-1 Arsenal

17:56 , Alex Young

67min: An absolutely gigantic 25 minutes left to play,

GOAL!

17:54 , Alex Young

City back into the lead, sweeping home from inside the area!

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

17:53 , Alex Young

64min: Arsenal’s defence standing tall, still. Haaland is feeding on scraps at the moment.

Matt Verri at the Etihad

17:50 , Alex Young

How big a moment are those two in the match and in the season?

Havertz is clean through and he can't beat Donnarumma, and then Eze is inches away from scoring, denied by the inside of the post.

OFF THE POST!

17:50 , Alex Young

61min: My word, Eze could not have come any closer without scoring!

He hits the inside of the post, and sees the ball fly away.

Arsenal have momentum!

SAVE!

17:49 , Alex Young

59min: A huge chance for Arsenal as Havertz is denied by Havertz at close range!

A brilliant break from the Gunners, who had City scrambling.

Matt Verri at the Etihad

17:46 , Alex Young

Arsenal cannot keep the ball for any sort of sustained period. It's a long, long time to rely on their defence to hold out.

Need to start offering something in attack themselves again.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

17:44 , Alex Young

55min: Arsenal can’t get out at the moment. City still trying to find a way through.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

17:42 , Alex Young

54min: Cries for a foul as Havertz goes down under pressure from Khusanov, but it’s just a shoulder barge and nothing more.

Matt Verri at the Etihad

17:41 , Alex Young

Arteta was absolutely furious when Eze just lost that ball and Raya had to save from Doku.

Spun around and punched the air in disgust. City very much on top at the start of this half.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

17:40 , Alex Young

52min: Now Eze gets caught in possession, allowing Doku to have a pop at goal from 18 yards.

Arteta is spitting feathers.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

17:40 , Alex Young

51min: Rodri with a stunning ball over the top towards Semenyo, but the latter’s first touch lets him down and the ball rolls through to Raya.

That was a huge chance.

OFF THE POST!

17:37 , Alex Young

48min: Martinelli makes a mistake at the corner, and sets up Haaland to lash the ball at goal from 10 yards but the striker slams the outside of the post.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

17:36 , Alex Young

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

17:35 , Alex Young

47min: City start the half back in possession.

Second half!

17:33 , Alex Young

46min: And we’re back underway!

No City changes.

Matt Verri at the Etihad

17:33 , Alex Young

Martinelli on for Madueke at half-time. Madueke had been a doubt for the match after going off early in midweek, so that is potentially a fitness-related change.

Matt Verri at the Etihad

17:31 , Alex Young

That's a good half from Arsenal. Big, big improvement on what they've been producing recently. Had some periods where they started to get pinned back a bit, but overall it's been a high-quality match.

17:25 , Alex Young

It’s been a very entertaining first half. The title in Arsenal’s hands.

17:24 , Alex Young

An obvious thing to say but Arsenal’s immediate equaliser completely halted City’s momentum after scoring.

City have clearly been on top since, but still disjointed in attack.

17:21 , Alex Young

All square at the break, and the Gunners will certainly be the happier of the two teams.

City need to keep it up, and more chances will come.

Half-time!

17:18 , Alex Young

47min: And that’s your lot.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

17:17 , Alex Young

45min: One minute added on.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

17:16 , Alex Young

45min: Saliba almost dispossessed by one of Haaland, Cherki or Semenyo but somehow finds a pass to Rice to save his bacon.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

17:15 , Alex Young

42min: Two City corners, two great deliveries which require clearances from underneath the crossbar.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

17:13 , Alex Young

41min: The intensity of the game continues to lessen as half-time approaches.

A fantastic block from Hincapie to deny Semenyo in the area.

Matt Verri at the Etihad

17:11 , Alex Young

Gabriel and Haaland have been kept apart for most of the half, with Gabriel on Cherki and Haaland largely playing on Saliba.

That's changed the last couple of minutes and they've spent most of that period wrestling each other. No love lost there, it's fair to say.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

17:10 , Alex Young

39min: Little bit of a tangle between Gabriel and Haaland on the deck. 50-50 stuff.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

17:09 , Alex Young

37min: And now Eze has thrown himself to the floor twice to buy two fouls.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

17:08 , Alex Young

36min: Mosquera booked for holding Doku.

The most obvious yellow card in Premier League history.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

17:05 , Alex Young

33min: Khusanov’s cross is headed tamely at Raya.

City will much more possession but not too many chances at the moment.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

17:02 , Alex Young

31min: Absolutely sublime from O’Reilly to get away from Odegaard and Madueke on the touchline, with at least one nutmeg.

He is some talent.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

17:00 , Alex Young

29min: I’ve already lost count of how many times Arsenal have won the ball back in City’s half.

Matt Verri at the Etihad

17:00 , Alex Young

Match has just started to settle down after a frantic 20 minutes.

Does feel like something is going to happen every time Donnarumma has the ball, though. He's all over the place.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

16:59 , Alex Young

27min: Arsenal’s press is so much better than the Carabao Cup final. They’ve certainly learnt their lesson.

Haaland has an opening from the edge of the area, but shanks a shot wide.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

16:56 , Alex Young

24min: Doku has the better of Mosquera time and again. A bit of a mismatch so far on that right flank.

Man City 1-1 Arsenal

16:53 , Alex Young

22min: Incredible start to this game. City back on top of possession, looking to hit back.

Matt Verri at the Etihad

16:52 , Alex Young

Donnarumma hasn't looked relaxed with the ball at his feet in the early stages and Havertz catches him there. We're set up to have some game now.

GOAL!

16:50 , Alex Young

18min: Arsenal are level immediately!

Havertz pounces on Donnarumma’s slightly heavy touch to equalise immediately!

That is bizarre and incredible!

GOAL!

16:48 , Alex Young

16min: Nevermind! Cherki sweeps home the opener in stunning fashion!

He picks the ball up on the edge of the area, dances past Gabriel and Rice to slot home!

Man City 0-0 Arsenal

16:46 , Alex Young

15min: City are the ones panicking now, they are rushed in possession.

Man City 0-0 Arsenal

16:46 , Alex Young

14min: Havertz has started the game well, dragging Khusanox out of position as intended.

Matt Verri at the Etihad

16:41 , Alex Young

Arsenal win another corner and it all came from Raya going long.

Havertz has the beating of Khusanov in the air - that's a match-up the Gunners can really look to exploit.

Don't necessarily need to take as many risks today to get up the pitch.

Man City 0-0 Arsenal

16:41 , Alex Young

9min: This time Raya opts to play it long, rather than risk another heavy touch.

Arsenal have settled slightly.

Man City 0-0 Arsenal

16:38 , Alex Young

6min: Two quick corners for Arsenal, the second of which sees Mosquera jump well but head wide.

Matt Verri at the Etihad

16:36 , Alex Young

Not the start Arsenal would have wanted. Raya takes a very heavy touch and nearly gets punished. Then City hit the post a minute later.

The Gunners haven't got going at all.

OFF THE POST!

16:36 , Alex Young

4min: Cherki hits the post!

Gabriel blocks Haaland’s flick, the rebound comes out to Cherki whose shot flicks off the inside of the post and into Raya’s arms.

Man City 0-0 Arsenal

16:35 , Alex Young

4min: Heart-in-mouth time as Raya almost gives the ball away to Haaland!

Man City 0-0 Arsenal

16:32 , Alex Young

1min: Doku fouled by Mosquera inside 20 seconds. That’s one battle to watch.

Kick-off!

16:31 , Alex Young

16:26 , Alex Young

Right, here come the players.

16:21 , Alex Young

Not long to go now.

The title race could well come down to this.

16:16 , Alex Young

Manchester City already have bragging rights over Arsenal this season after their Carabao Cup final win, but the squad may well swap that for another 2-0 win today.

A win is simply a must for them today.

There must be 100 fans pitchside ahead of kick-off. It’s absolute chaos in the technical area.

Think the more exclusive club at the moment might actually be those in the stands.

Matt Verri at the Etihad

15:59 , Alex Young

”That's an Arsenal lineup that will increase the belief among supporters. Havertz up front is the right call - Arsenal need someone up front today who can hold it up and ease the pressure on the defence.

“Eze on the left, with Odegaard back to start at No10. A lineup that should offer much more technical security than we've seen recently. “

A defeat today will not be a disaster for Arsenal.

If City win today, and then beat Burnley in midweek, they will drop into second (again, ole ole).

But their fixtures thereafter are far kinder than City’s. All extremely winnable.

It’s not do-or-die today. But you feel the players will need to be told that.

15:34 , Alex Young

As Matt says, Timber absence aside, that’s the line-up all Arsenal fans wanted to see.

Stunned silence surely around the Etihad as most of Arsenal’s doubtful players are fit enough to start - and that’s a huge boost for today’s visitors.

Guardiola, meanwhile, has settled on his team for the run-in.

Plenty of question marks on player availability head of the game, and most have made it.

O’Reilly starts for Man City, meaning Guardiola has named the same team which wiped the floor with Chelsea last week.

It is two changes for Arsenal, with Odegaard replacing Martinelli and Havertz starting ahead of Gyokeres.

Madueke also starts, but Calafiori and Timber miss out.

Guardiola makes title race prediction

15:05 , Alex Young

Pep Guardiola has said the Premier League title race will be over if Manchester City lose to Arsenal.

Man City begin the weekend six points behind Arsenal, but, crucially perhaps, have played a game less than the league leaders.

With the trip to relegation-threatened Burnley being brought forward to next Wednesday due to their involvement in the FA Cup semi-final, City can move to the top of the table by winning the next two league games.

Though, if Arsenal avoid defeat they will remain in control of their own destiny with five games remaining after visiting the Etihad.

Speaking on Friday, Guardiola went one step further by declaring the title will be “over” if the Gunners leave the Etihad with all three points - for the first time since January 2015.

“Yes, obviously. If we lose, it is over,” the Spaniard told reporters. “The other two results, knowing that Arsenal didn't beat Bournemouth - we still have games to play.

“Six games is a lot and especially in our calendar. Everton away, Bournemouth away, Aston Villa the last game at home.

“Crystal Palace and Brentford. There are still many things to do."

Arteta makes Arsenal tactics vow

14:55 , Alex Young

Mikel Arteta has declared Arsenal will go all-out to beat Manchester City today.

A win for City would mean they could go top of the table if they then beat Burnley on Wednesday night.

Arsenal would maintain their current advantage of six points at the summit with a draw, but Arteta dismissed the suggestion that his side would be happy with a point this weekend.

"I'm not going to spend one second talking about that," the Spaniard said on Friday.

"We prepare every game to win, that's why we are where we are and we're going to continue to do the same.

"We want to win the game. We are there to win the game. We haven't talked about that [a draw]. We need to win the game and we are preparing to win the game.

"No different to any stadium we have been to in the last five years. There's no change there."

Excuses have run out for Arsenal ahead of red-hot title showdown

14:47 , Alex Young

“Beating Arsenal once is so difficult,” Pep Guardiola said last weekend, after Manchester City’s win over Chelsea. “Imagine beating them twice in a few weeks.”

With the season threatening to slip from Arsenal’s grasp, that does not currently feel like a particularly taxing test of imagination, writes Matt Verri.

Last month’s Carabao Cup final was billed as a defining moment in the season. One to establish Arsenal as a trophy-winning force and leave City counted out, or a chance for Guardiola’s side to land a counter-punch and have the Gunners swirling in self-doubt.

The latter has materialised. After that final defeat, the best-case scenario for Arsenal was that it could be compartmentalised and left at Wembley. Instead it is a shadow they cannot shake.

Losing to City last month could be explained as a one-off bad day, even if it came on such a big occasion. Southampton knocking Arsenal out of the FA Cup came with the caveat of a rotated Gunners side.

Forgiving explanations have now run out. Bournemouth’s deserved win on Saturday was disastrous for Arsenal. Any fear factor has gone.

Man City vs Arsenal prediction

14:33 , Alex Young

With the Premier League title on the line, questions have been asked of Arsenal’s mental fortitude. This will be the greatest test yet of their constitution.

Recent defeats by Southampton and Bournemouth have plainly wreaked havoc on the team’s confidence, and this high-flying City will allow no room for error.

The Carabao Cup final ended in a 2-0 defeat for Arsenal. We expect this match to follow a similar script.

Man City to win, 2-0.

Predicted XIs

14:25 , Alex Young

Predicted Man City XI: Donnarumma; Nunes, Khusanov, Guehi, O’Reilly; Rodri, Silva; Semenyo, Cherki, Doku; Haaland

Predicted Arsenal XI: Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Hincapie; Zubimendi, Rice; Madueke, Eze, Martinelli; Havertz

Early Arsenal team news

14:20 , Alex Young

Mikel Arteta will make a late decision on several players.

Arsenal will be without Bukayo Saka, who has failed to recover from an Achilles injury in time to feature.

Noni Madueke is a doubt with the knee issue that forced him off in midweek against Sporting, with Arteta leaving it to the last minute to make a call.

Arsenal hope that Madueke will be available, though Arteta has indicated he would be willing to throw Max Dowman into the lion's den if required.

Martin Odegaard, Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori also still have to prove their fitness after injury problems of their own.Arteta could opt to bring Kai Havertz into his starting lineup to help Arsenal hold the ball and get up the pitch.

Eberechi Eze is likely to continue at No10, while Arteta must decide between Ben White or Cristhian Mosquera, who impressed on Wednesday night, at right-back. Mikel Merino remains out, along with Saka.

Early Man City team news

14:12 , Alex Young

Manchester City have Nico O’Reilly fit for today’s title showdown, though Ruben Dias will miss out again.

O’Reilly was the match-winner as City saw off rivals Arsenal 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final last month, but had been a doubt for today’s Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium after going off with a hamstring injury after opening the scoring in the 3-0 win over Chelsea.

Dias missed that game in west London as he continues to nurse an ankle problem suffered in the Champions League last-16 second-leg defeat by Real Madrid that saw him also miss out on Wembley in addition to the FA Cup quarter-final demolition of Liverpool.

If O’Reilly is not ready to start against Arsenal, then Rayan Ait-Nouri would take his place at left-back - as he did off the bench against Chelsea.

Marc Guehi and Abdukodir Khusanov should continue as the centre-back pairing in the absence of Dias, with Matheus Nunes on the right of defence and Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal.

Bernardo Silva and Rodri have been impressing in midfield, with Rayan Cherki starring as the central figure in an attacking triumvirate alongside Antoine Semenyo and Jeremy Doku, supporting prolific striker Erling Haaland.

It’s the biggie! Manchester City host Arsenal in what could be the true Premier League title decider.

Even a defeat today isn’t disastrous for the Gunners, but they hardly cope well with pressure.
