Man City star Ilkay Gundogan beats Mesut Ozil to enter Premier League record books

Ilkay Gundogan entered the record books on Saturday as Manchester City continued their push for the Premier League title at Burnley.

Having seen their nearest rivals Liverpool overtake them momentarily following their 2-0 win over Watford, City knew they had to come up with a response. And they made no mistake as they produced a professional display at Turf Moor.

Pep Guardiola’s side raced into the lead as Kevin De Bruyne struck in the opening five minutes of the game. The visitors didn’t let up with their pressure though, and they doubled their lead midway through the first half to secure the three points to take them back to the top of the table.

And while that second goal gave City’s travelling supporters cause for celebration as they returned to the summit, it also provided its goalscorer with his own moment to savour. In doubling his side’s lead, Gundogan became the Premier League’s top-scoring German player of all time.

The 31-year-old struck the 34th league goal of his Blues career to take him past former Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil on 33 goals. It’s a record Gundogan will look to extend as City aim to add another title to their growing collection.

Victory over Burnley ensures City return to the top of the Premier League ahead of what is set to be a crucial couple of weeks in their season. They begin with the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, before hosting Liverpool at the Etihad in what is being billed as a potential title decider.

The second leg against Atletico follows a few days later as the Blues look to continue their quest for a first European crown. They then face Jurgen Klopp’s side again, this time in the FA Cup at Wembley as they look to book their place in the final and keep their treble hopes alive.
