Man City’s unnoticed hero against Chelsea was two players in one to let Kevin De Bruyne shine

Perhaps the latest sign of Phil Foden's extraordinary talent is that Manchester City fans are starting to not notice him.

The 21-year-old has left City fans in awe over the past two-and-a-half years, so much so that now when he doesn't pull off something obviously spectacular, his other many valuable contributions don't merit a mention.

That was the case in City's 1-0 victory over Chelsea on Saturday, but as Pep Guardiola's side surged into a 13-point lead at the top of the Premier League, Foden was anything but inconsequential.

There are not many players in the world capable of excelling in a Guardiola team. Every position and role in the side comes with a never-ending list of objectives and responsibilities, with City's players drilled throughout the week on what to do in every eventuality and situation come matchday.

Fewer still are the number of players who can play two different roles in a Guardiola team in the same game, pretty much at the same time. Foden is one of them.

Against Chelsea, Foden was deployed in a now-familiar false nine position, with Jack Grealish on the left wing and Raheem Sterling on the right.

Thomas Tuchel setting his side up in their usual 3-4-3 formation - with wing-backs Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta pushing up high to sit on City's full-backs, Foden played a crucial role in freeing up Kevin De Bruyne to create numerical advantages in the final third.

Foden's primary brief was to occupy the most central of Chelsea's three defenders, Thiago Silva. The youngster, 16 years the Brazilian's junior, did so with ease as he dragged him both right and left.

As well as occupying Silva, Foden also attracted the interests of Mateo Kovacic and even at times N'Golo Kante. As a false nine Foden often dropped deep into midfield, meaning that Chelsea needed to pick him up.

When that happened, De Bruyne was given the freedom to surge forward to either the left or right flank to create a two-on-one situation against the right-sided centre-back (Antonio Rudiger) or the left-sided centre-back (Malang Sarr).

This tactic worked particularly well on the left during the first half. Foden would drag Silva towards the centre of the penalty area while Rudiger would feel responsible for closing down Grealish on the wing, leaving a huge gap between the two defenders for De Bruyne to run into.

Although City didn't score during the first half, it was through this approach that De Bruyne was able to terrorise Chelsea's defence and keep the ball in their half.

Foden's role also goes some way to explaining why Guardiola selected De Bruyne to play ahead of Ilkay Gundogan - the German is not as good in the transitions as the Belgian, with the latter more suited to bursting through into spaces to create chances or shoot.

Few critics or fans had much to say about Foden after the game, a testament to the selfless supporting part he played.

The young England star has proven on many occasions that he can be the man for the big moments, but on Saturday he also showed his willingness and tactical intelligence in ducking out of the spotlight for the greater good of the team.
