Man City's transfer business compared to Liverpool FC's as Kalvin Phillips gives Pep Guardiola unique quality

Here are your Manchester City evening headlines for Monday, June 27.

Alan Shearer rates Man City transfer business against Premier League rivals Liverpool

Alan Shearer admits the signs are ominous for would-be challengers to Manchester City and Liverpool with both clubs already making their mark in the summer transfer window.

Having missed out on Harry Kane last summer, City turned their attentions to Erling Haaland and have signed the Norway goal machine from Borussia Dortmund for £51million. However, that move was promptly responded to by Jurgen Klopp as the Reds offset Sadio Mane leaving by recruiting Benfica forward Darwin Nunez.

Both players had Manchester United interested before their intentions became clear. Haaland bolsters a City side that scored 99 goals in the Premier League alone without him last season, while Nunez fired 34 goals in 41 outings across all competitions to emerge on the radar for elite European clubs.

Man City signing Kalvin Phillips will give Pep Guardiola more midfield options than ever before

In terms of the development of the City squad, the deal to sign Kalvin Phillips is a one-in, one-out kind of transfer, with the England international essentially taking the place of Fernandinho.

The deal to sign Haaland is fixing a (relative) problem position for City, but Pep Guardiola is happy with the size and depth of his squad and the club's transfer business these days is generally replacing or refreshing, rather than any major cosmetic surgery.

Fernandinho's decision to leave the club at the end of last season left a place in midfield and while 18-year-old Romeo Lavia is highly thought of, City felt they needed a more experienced player to replace the iconic club captain.
