Man City legend Vincent Kompany wins battle with former Manchester United star Michael Carrick

Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany is celebrating this weekend as his Burnley side beat former Manchester United star Michael Carrick's Middlesbrough 3-1 in the Championship.

Kompany joined the Clarets in the summer, replacing Sean Dyche on a permanent basis after he was sacked. Since his arrival at Turf Moor, the Belgian has overseen a brilliant rebuild with Burnley battling at the top of the second tier.

Carrick, meanwhile, has been at the Teesside club since the end of October after Chris Wilder was sacked due to a poor start to the campaign. United's former temporary manager has overturned Boro's form and in less than two months they have moved from a relegation battle to mid-table.

With this in mind, it was expected that it would be a close contest at Turf Moor when the two teams met on Saturday and so it proved in the first half with the sides going in at the break goalless. Shortly after the interval, a misplaced pass from Manuel Benson allowed Middlesbrough's Duncan Watmore to latch onto the ball and give Carrick's men the advantage.

Benson would redeem himself less than 10 minutes later as he beat City loanee Zack Steffen at his near post for the equaliser. Seven minutes after the equaliser the tables had turned completely.

Benson managed to secure his second of the match as his cross was misjudged by Steffen and sneaked in off the back post to make it 2-1. Middlesbrough's horror spell was complete shortly after as Jonny Howson diverted a corner into his own goal to secure the three points for Kompany.

Middlesbrough did have the opportunity to get back into the match just before stoppage time as Connor Roberts was adjudged to have handled the ball to stop Chuba Akpom from scoring. Roberts received a red card, however, the away side's rotten afternoon in Lancashire was complete when Akpom's spot kick was saved.

Burnley's victory sees them extend their lead at the top of the Championship to six points with Sheffield United playing on Monday. Middlesbrough remain 13th after the loss.
