Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is set for surgery on a persistent shoulder problem that is going to leave his World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.
Phillips made his third appearance for the Blues when he came on as a late substitute against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, but he has since suffered a relapse with a shoulder problem and wasn't part of the matchday squad against Wolves at Molineux on Saturday.
The 26-year-old has had two significant shoulder injuries during his career and picked up a knock in that area during City's friendly in Barcelona towards the end of August.
