Pep Guardiola expressed his disappointment at the removal of the away goals rule despite Manchester City's difficulties as a direct result of it.
Monaco knocked the Blues out in his first year at the Etihad on away goals after both teams scored six goals over the two fixtures, and two years later Tottenham won after a 4-4 draw over the legs when Raheem Sterling's dramatic winner was heartbreakingly ruled out through VAR. Guardiola also saw his Bayern Munich knocked out by Atletico in the Champions League semi-final on away goals in 2016.
The rule has been scrapped by UEFA for this season, changing the way teams will have to think about their two-legged ties when they host opponents and travel to them. Guardiola may not have too many happy memories of away goals but says City will try to play their normal way and approach it aiming to win both fixtures.
