Man City attempting to sign Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji

Manchester City are looking to make Dortmund centre-back Manuel Akanji their sixth major signing of the summer transfer window.

Txiki Begiristain has already brought in five new faces to the City squad, with Erling Haaland, Julian Alvarez, Kalvin Phillips, Sergio Gomez and Stefan Ortega helping to bring major change. The recruitment team are not finished there though, with an attempt to sign Akanji to join their centre-backs.

Pep Guardiola is already facing the prospect of another month without the injured Aymeric Laporte, while Nathan Ake suffered a groin injury against Newcastle. With Akanji available for a cut-price fee of around £15m, as The Athletic first reported, City are hoping to seize the opportunity to bolster their centre-back options.

Akanji has been at Dortmund - one of City's Champions League opponents this season in the group stage - for the last four years after joining from Basel and made 36 appearances for them last season. However, he is into the final year of his contract at the club and it is thought that Dortmund would rather get a fee for him now than risk losing him for nothing next summer.

City resisted Chelsea's attempts to sign Ake earlier this summer after failing to land up a replacement that would allow them to accept anything less than their valuation. Having lost the Dutch defender to injury and seen the team concede five goals in their last two matches, a decision to go back into the transfer window has been taken with the hope that a deal can be completed.
