Man City and England defender Alex Greenwood signs new contract at WSL title contenders

Alex Greenwood has signed a new three-year contract extension with club Manchester City.

Greenwood, 29, extends her stay at the Academy Stadium until the summer of 2026 having first arrived at the club in 2020 from French heavyweights Olympique Lyonnais. She has since become one of the club's leading defenders and has started every WSL game this season.

A left-back traditionally Greenwood, whose deal was due to expire next summer, has spent this season at the heart of the City defence. She has helped Gareth Taylor's team currently on a ten-game unbeaten run in all competitions. Previously Greenwood has spent time at local rivals Manchester United before moving to France, with spells at Everton, Notts County and Liverpool also on her CV.

Greenwood, who was part of the England squad that won the European Championships last summer, has chosen to stay at City, saying she feels settled at the title chasing Citizens. Speaking after signing on the dotted line, s he said: “I’m really pleased to have my new deal sorted and it’s come at the perfect time – after a strong first half to the season, I can now just focus on the remainder of the campaign and the next three years.

“Feeling settled at a club for me is so important and I absolutely have that here at City, which is why I’ve signed such a long-term deal - I just love being here.

“I have a really good relationship with Gareth (Taylor) – we’ve worked together throughout my whole time here so far – and the way he wants us to play marries up exactly with how I want to personally, so it’s the perfect match for me.

“I hold myself to such high standards on a personal level, and I will go out and give 100% in every single game I play for this football club which I hope has been clear to see over the past two-and-a-half years.

“We’ve got a fantastic group of players this season – the togetherness in the squad is just spot on, and we’re in a really good place as a collective at the moment.

“We just want to keep winning football matches and trophies which is what we expect of ourselves here and it’s an exciting time to be at City, both now and for the future.”

Greenwood has made 80 appearances over the last two-and-a-half seasons, scoring five goals, and has also donned the captain’s armband several times. And manager Taylor revealed he saw her as a key part of his future plans.

"We’re thrilled to have Alex sign a new deal here at the club," added Taylor. “She is an incredibly important member of the squad, and her experience has proven invaluable to not only herself, but those around her in the team over the past few seasons.

“Alex is a consummate professional and has proven throughout her career what a talent and asset she is to every team that she has played in.

“She is a key part of our plans for the future, and we look forward to continuing to work with her over the coming years.”
