A south suburban man has been charged with shooting his 19-year-old son during a fight early Friday inside their Oak Lawn home.
Officers responded about 2:30 a.m. to the 9500 block of South Kenneth Avenue for a report of a person shot, according to Oak Lawn police.
The 19-year-old was shot in the abdomen, and he was taken to Christ Medical Center, where he underwent surgery to remove his gallbladder, Cook County prosecutors said during a livestreamed bail hearing Sunday.
Mark Pillette, 57, was arrested and later charged with a felony count of aggravated battery with a firearm, police said.
During an argument, Pillette punched his son in the face, and his son then punched Pillette in the face, leading to a physical struggle in their living room, prosecutors said.
Pillette went to the bathroom after the fight to clean himself off. He returned to the living room with a chrome revolver, shot his son once, then called 911. The bullet struck the 19-year-old in the stomach, and it exited through his back, prosecutors said.
A defense attorney argued that Pillette acted in self-defense, saying the 57-year-old suffered facial fractures. Judge Charles Beach noted Pillette had a “significantly swollen eye” in court Sunday.
Beach set bail at $100,000. Pillette would have to post $10,000 to be released from jail ahead of trial.
His next court date is scheduled for Wednesday.
