A grand jury in Virginia has indicted a Manassas Park man, charging him with murder in connection to the disappearance of his wife, Mamta Kafle Bhatt, who has been missing since July. The accused also faces charges of defiling a body and concealment of a body.
Mamta Kafle Bhatt, a 28-year-old registered nurse, was last seen on July 27 at UVA Health Prince William Medical Center in Manassas. Authorities have stated that DNA tests confirmed blood found in her bedroom belonged to her, and evidence suggests she was killed on July 29.
Despite ongoing efforts to locate Mamta's body, investigators have not yet found her remains. However, the police chief expressed confidence in the strength of the case, citing evidence of dismemberment and blood traces found in the couple's home.
The accused, a former Fairfax County police recruit and US Army Reserve specialist, initially provided conflicting information to investigators and did not report his wife missing until three days after a wellness check was conducted at their residence.
Following a search of the couple's home, the suspect was taken into custody and denied bail in September. Prosecutors revealed that he was captured on camera disposing of trash bags in dumpsters and trash compactors in the days following his wife's disappearance.
Family members and coworkers of Mamta Kafle Bhatt expressed a mix of relief and sorrow upon hearing the new charges, emphasizing that their ultimate desire is to find closure and justice for their loved one.
The accused is expected to appear in court to face the formal charges, as the legal proceedings continue in this tragic case.
