A man who allegedly assaulted a female journalist in Kalgoorlie following the Diggers and Dealers Mining Forum has been charged by police.

On Tuesday, Kalgoorlie detectives confirmed a 30-year-old Shenton Park man had been charged with one count of unlawful and indecent assault over the alleged incident, which occurred on August 2.

Police alleged a woman in her 20s was indecently assaulted by the accused man.

The allegations were made by the Kalgoorlie Miner's deputy editor Amber Lilley.

Diggers and Dealers chairman Jim Walker said the organisation was disappointed to learn of the alleged incident that occurred at a sideline function during the week.

"Whilst the incident did not occur at a Diggers and Dealers event, the forum has a zero-tolerance policy towards such behaviour," he said.

The alleged incident took place at the Graduates Hall of the West Australian School of Mines, with school alumni hosting a networking event the same week as the conference.

A joint statement from the West Australian School of Mines Alumni and Curtin University said they were "extremely disappointed" by the allegations.

"We are absolutely committed to providing a safe and inclusive learning and work environment," the statement read.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayor John Bowler said while the incident did not occur at a Diggers and Dealers' event, he had spoken to the organisers about the alleged incident.

Following the incident, Ms Lilley said The West Australian, which owns the Kalgoorlie Miner, had made an official complaint with the man's employer.

The man is due to appear before the Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court on September 12.
