A man arrested in connection with the death of an 89-year-old former farmer at Mercy Hospital in Co Cork has now been charged, gardai have confirmed.
Matthew Healy was discovered dead in a ward at the southern hospital. A man charged in connection with the incident is due to appear before a sitting of Cork District Court tomorrow morning, Tuesday, January 24.
Officers launched an investigation on Sunday evening.

A Garda spokesperson said: “The man arrested by gardai in connection with this investigation has now been charged.
“He remains in Garda custody and is expected to appear before a sitting of Cork District Court tomorrow morning, Tuesday 24th January 2023”.
In a statement released on January 23, gardai confirmed that a man aged in his 30s had been arrested and taken to Bridewell Garda Station in Cork.
"The scene is currently preserved for forensic and technical examination. An incident room has been established at the Bridewell Garda Station and the services of the State Pathologist have been requested,” a Garda spokesperson said.
Gardai also said that a family liaison officer has been appointed and that the family of the deceased has been notified.
“Investigating gardai are not currently seeking anyone else in relation to this incident,” the spokesperson added.
