Man Charged After 32 Y.O. Allegedly Shot Dead In Melbourne High-Rise Building

Melbourne shooting

A 47-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of a 32-year-old man in what police allege was a targeted shooting at a high-rise apartment complex in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, 9News reports.

A resident told investigators he saw a man and woman fleeing the apartment complex around the time of the shooting, before driving away in a white SUV that had been waiting nearby.

Police later made multiple arrests in connection with the incident, including one in Bonnie Brook in Melbourne’s outer west, and two others approximately 100 kilometres away in Talbot and Maryborough, north of Ballarat.

A 47-year-old man from Bonnie Brook was taken into custody, along with another 47-year-old man from the same suburb and a 27-year-old woman from Maryborough on Thursday evening.

The second Bonnie Brook man and the woman have since been released pending further enquiries.

Emergency services were called to the building on Whitehorse Road in Box Hill at approximately 1:50am yesterday after reports of an altercation.

Residents in the complex told authorities they heard a loud bang, followed shortly by the activation of the building’s fire alarm system. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Maybe around 1am or 1.15am I heard something, like barely a yell or something,” one resident told 9News.

Residents were then evacuated onto the street for several hours before being permitted to re-enter their homes just before 5.30am.

“There was a lady, just out of the blue started scream crying,” another resident added.

The 32-year-old man who died is believed to have activated the building’s fire alarm while inside an elevator prior to his death.

The lift, along with the entire 11th floor of the complex, has been declared a crime scene as investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The man, who has not yet been formally identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“They haven’t told us much, just that the worst happened, like that it can’t get much worse,” one resident said.

Another resident described the situation as ”pretty scary”, adding that “it was really, really tragic to hear the screams of the family members”.

Forensic officers and homicide detectives have examined the building as part of the investigation, gathering evidence to assist in their findings.

Yesterday, Victoria Police told the media: “A crime scene has been established, and the investigation remains ongoing”, adding: “Police are treating the incident as targeted.”
