Man buys $898 Walmart engagement ring. Then his girlfriend says no because he got the wrong one. Women are on her side: ‘So pathetic’

Proposing is a tricky science that requires the right mood, time, place and ring. But one man unfortunately picked the exact wrong option when choosing the latter.

A Threads user by the name of Priscilla (@prissyxoxo25) posed a question that’s since garnered lots of attention. TikTok content creators like Mikayla Flynn even reposted the screenshots and discussed the situation in-depth, asking, “Is it worth leaving someone who doesn’t get the right ring?”

Flynn and others argued that it might be, posting a detailed explanation that’s garnered 955,000 views since Nov. 4.

Why Did Priscilla Reject Her Partner?

Priscilla, a regular Instagram Threads poster, posted a question on Nov 2 for her audience. In it, she asked whether anyone had any “thoughts” on her partner’s proposal. The Threads user posted a screenshot from their message exchange, where Tyler, her partner, asked what happened and why she didn’t say yes when he asked.

“I just got to ask Mani… What happened tonight?” Tyler said.” I’ve been planning this proposal for over a year. [You] really told me no in front of everyone [and] that [expletive] crushed me.”

Priscilla explained that he got an embarrassing ring from Walmart and that she was not confident in their future based on his low effort. Tyler claimed that $900, which he spent on the Walmart engagement ring, was still a “lot of money,” but Priscilla emphasized that the ring went against her wishes and desires for a proposal.

This seemingly upset Tyler, who said, “Wow so everything I did just didn’t matter to you, huh.”

Priscilla replied, saying, “It mattered.. but not enough for me to say yes to a forever i’m not sure you’re ready for.”

Additional voices weigh in on the Walmart engagement ring

Flynn posted the screenshots two days later, saying, “We  can and should say no if you pick the wrong ring.”

She proceeded to explain the post in a way that “boys will understand,” using a car-buying example.

“ You have a one-car garage for some reason and no driveway. You have to pick one vehicle [and] only one vehicle for the rest of your life. But the caveat [is] that your girl has to surprise you, go pick it out, and bring it home for you. You have to use it every single day and you can’t trade it in for the rest of your life,” Flynn said. She then explained that any blue-collar man would be crushed if they were stuck with a car they didn’t want instead of a “3rd generation cummins.”

“ She says, ‘This is symbolic of our love. It’s perfect for you, perfectly reflective of your personality. I know it’s not in our exact price range, but I couldn’t wait to propose to you. Here it is forever. No trade backs, OK?’  You might say they’re not the same,” Flynn told her viewers.

Her larger point was that Tyler got his girlfriend a ring she was completely disinterested in, with the tag still attached to it, and proposed to her with it in front of her entire family. It wasn’t necessarily about affordability, as there are more tasteful rings that cost even less than the ring he selected. It was more about the fact that he got the wrong ring that didn’t fit her or her personality.

As one commenter explained, “For $900+ he could’ve gone to a small jeweller and had something custom made. Probably for less than he paid for the Walmart [engagement] ring.”

How did users on threads respond?

Unsurprisingly, Instagram Threads users had incredibly similar reactions to Tyler’s Walmart engagement ring.

One commenter quoted Tyler by saying, “‘You really told me no in front of everyone’ that’s why they do it in public ladies, so you feel like you can’t say no.”

Others simply expressed how memorable the moment is supposed to be and how one small thing can ruin it. “I hate a ‘it’s the thought that counts’ ahhh dude. To be loved is to be known,” another Threads user said.
