LUDHIANA: A person allegedly tried to rape a seven-year old girl living in the neighbourhood in a village in Jagraon. The accused is a labourer and has two sons aged 15 years old and 10 years old.

In his police complainant, father of the girl said he worked as daily wager with the mason of the village. He added that he has three daughters and a son and the eldest daughter is seven years old and Class II student in a local school.

The complainant said on February 23 at 6pm, when he returned home after day’s work, he caught the accused, who was in drunken condition, trying to undress his daughter. He added that on seeing him, the accused fled from the spot.

Victim’s father said initially they informed the village panchayat about the incident, but nothing came out of it so he decided to approach the police.

Based on his complaint, the police booked the accused under section 376 of IPC (Rape) and sections of Protection from Sexual Offences Act.

Investigating Officer of the case, sub-inspector Jugraj Singh said a manhunt has been launched to nab the accused. He added that the accused is married, but his wife left him about five years ago.

Police officials said at the time of incident, mother and siblings of the girl had gone to a house in the neighbourhood. They added that the accused knew the family, as he lives nearby.

(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
