A man has been jailed and banned from Kirkby town centre after a series of thefts.
Anthony Hughes, 33, of Northwood in Kirkby was found guilty of committing what police called "prolific shop theft offences" that plagued the town centre for months and cost businesses in the area thousands of pounds.
Hughes was jailed for four months for the thefts. He also received eight months for an affray incident that took place last year in the area, bringing the total time he will spend in jail to 12 months.

Hughes has also been banned from Kirkby town centre, an area that includes the Shopping Parade, Kirkby bus station, Morrisons and McDonalds. He will be banned from the area until Sunday, February 16 2025.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We welcome the sentencing of a man who has been jailed for a total of twelve months in prison for an affray incident last year and numerous theft from shops within the Kirkby Town Centre.
"Anthony Hughes, 33 years of Northwood, Kirkby was sentenced at Liverpool Magistrates Court on Thursday February 16 2023 after being found guilty for the offences. He has received 8 months for the affray and 4 months for the shop thefts. In addition, he has also been given a fine for £156 as well as a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) which expires on February 16 2025.
"This is due to the prolific shop theft offences Hughes has been committing which have plagued the town centre for months and cost the businesses in the area into the thousand of pounds.
"The CBO has conditions attached to it in which Hughes must adhered to. These include not entering the area bounded by but not including Webster Drive from the junction of with St. Chad’s Drive to Cherryfield Drive, Cherryfield Drive to Kirkby bus station including Norwich way/war memorial from Kirkby bus station to Hall Lane not including Hall Lane to County Road, County Road from the junction of Hall Lane to Irlam Drive onto and including St. Chad’s Drive returning to Webster Drive."
