Man arrested over 'weapons' incident after armed cops swoop on Scots village

Police have arrested a 41-year-old man in connection with an alleged weapons incident on the streets of a quiet village. Officers, including specialist armed response units, were called to an address in Port Elphinstone, immediately south of Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, shortly before 3pm on Wednesday, January 25.

Elphinstone Road and a number of connecting streets were blockaded for several hours while police engaged in what is believed to have been a stand-off. Locals unable to return to their homes were understood to have been accommodated at a nearby community centre until police were able to bring the incident to a close.

Police have not commented on the type of weapon allegedly being used. But the force confirmed a man had been arrested.

The incident brought much of the village, which has a population of around 2,000, to a halt. Images shared with the Record showed a police cordon being erected at the junction of Elphinstone Rd and Ladeside Road, next to a ladieswear' store.

Armed cops were then seen in nearby Crichie Circle before the incident was resolved. The police investigation remains ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers, including specialist officers, are currently in attendance at an address in Port Elphinstone, Inverurie, following reports of a man seen in possession of a possible weapon in the Elphinstone Road area.

"Police were called to the scene at around 2.55pm on Wednesday, January 25, and a 41-year-old man was arrested. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
