Man charged with murder of talented footballer, 32, in south London

Detectives investigating the fatal street stabbing of a footballer in south London have charged a 36-year-old man with murder.

Theo Porteous, 32, was knifed a number of times on Thessaly Road, Nine Elms close to Battersea Power Station at lunchtime on August 24.

He was pronounced dead at the scene roughly 30 minutes after police were called.

On Saturday, officers detained Earl Morin-Britton, 36, of Rose Hill, Sutton and took him to a south London police station.

He will appear in custody at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Monday accused of murdering Mr Porteous.

The Metropolitan Police had released a CCTV image of a man they wanted to speak to in connection with the attack.

Former teammates of Mr Porteous at Old Thorntonians FC in Putney Vale and Earlsfield paid tribute by wearing black armbands and observing a minute’s applause before their matches this weekend.

Labour Councillor Sara Apps, who represents the Shaftesbury and Queenstown wards, said: “Rest in Power, Theo Porteous, who we lost last week after he was violently attacked.

“His family and friends are in our thoughts tonight as they find the strength to celebrate his life and mourn his passing.”

Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley, leading the investigation, said: “My thoughts are with Theo’s family and friends, at what is an unimaginable time for them.

“I have assured them that I and my team will do everything we can to bring those responsible for Theo’s murder to justice.”

Police added his family continue to be supported by specially trained officers.
